A Note From The GM-
Having spent a career as an airline pilot I am well aware of the
benefits of using simulators in a training environment. Simulators
allow the trainee to experience situations that would be impossible
to safely experience in the real world and to hone their skills to
affect a successful outcome of the training scenario. In the world
of aviation, that could be an engine failure, hydraulic system
failure, electrical failure...well...you get the picture. As a pilot, one
learns how to handle such failures so that if or when it happens in
real life they are dealt with appropriately. The training programs the
subconscious brain and when the "stuff" hits the fan in the real
world creating a high stress situation we will fall back on that
training. Having "experienced" it first in the simulator has been a
life saver many times in the real world.
Firearms training is no different. While one learns the
fundamentals of marksmanship and can nail the bullseye with
every shot on a paper target, how will you react if you are put in a
situation where you must use your firearm to defend yourself from
death or serious bodily harm? I can answer that for you. If you
have never been trained to handle that situation or given enough
thought as to how you would react ahead of time you will panic. If
you have no training to fall back on you will hesitate trying to
decide what the appropriate action should be. And, in some cases,
that can cost you your life. Whether you are a law enforcement
officer, security officer or civilian, being able to experience real
world scenarios in the safe environment of a simulator is a huge
training benefit.
We have now installed the Meggitt/F.A.T.S. firearm training
simulator at The Marksman. We are the only civilian entity in the
Tidewater area and one of just a very few in the entire State that
has a firearms training simulator. The simulator is available for law
enforcement use as well as civilian use, however, the training
scenarios are different for obvious reasons. For LEOs the benefits
will be recognized immediately. For civilians, most have never
experienced anything like this. How would you react if someone
broke into your home or held you up at an ATM? What would be
considered a legal response vs. an illegal one? Now you can find
out.
This is really an exciting time for us here at The Marksman. While
nothing replaces live shooting on our range the simulator yields
training benefits that simply can't be duplicated on a live range. Our
customers who have used the "sim" come out absolutely ecstatic.
"WOW!", "WOW!", and "WOW!" are usually their first 3 words.
While we have always taken great pride in the training we provide
to our customers, the addition of the firearms training simulator
makes available a level of training not obtainable anywhere else in
the area to the general public.
Stay safe-
